On the shores of Israel, submerged under the sea, a Neolithic civilization has been found. The biggest mystery of this settlement is that it had a well of potable water to supply the population and an olive oil mill. Being that it is 7,500-8,000 years old, it is the oldest olive oil industry found of all time so far.
In this underwater archaeological site, as indicated in the Journal of Archaeological Science, numerous remains of crushed olive pits and evidence of stone tools for the production of olive oil have been found.
This publication already used information from a previous study, from 1997, which described the process of oil extraction in the prehistoric era. In this study, another site was located near Israel, from 6,500 years ago, so what was found under the sea exceeds that find by more than a thousand years, which makes it the oldest olive oil mill in the world.
The research team of the University of Flinders in Australia, Israel University of Haifa and the Antiquities Authority of Israel have been responsible for the excavation of submerged structures in the area.
